Wikipedia's Nobel laureate refused to set up a site because it was not popular
Wikipedia dictionary suffers many criticisms when refusing to make a biography page for Dr. Donna Strickland, a female scholar who won this year's Nobel Prize in Physics.
Canadian researcher Donna Strickland , an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Waterloo, is one of three scholars who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2018. But the physicist doesn't have a personal information page on the open encyclopedia. Wikipedia remained 1.5 hours after the award was announced, Independent today reported.
Researcher Donna Strickland.
When a Wikipedia user tried to set up a page about Mrs. Strickland in March, the request was denied by the censor."The references of the submission show that the subject is not eligible for Wikipedia articles," the website operator responded. A few hours after the announcement of the Nobel Prize for Physics, Wikipedia editors hastily set up Strickland's own page with information about her published works and awards.
Ms. Strickland is the third woman to win the Nobel Prize in Physics with Marie Curie (1903) and Maria Goeppert-Mayer (1963), according to the BBC. Canadian doctor shared this year's award with two researchers Arthur Ashkin (American) and Gerard Mourou (French). They were honored for their discoveries in the field of laser physics.
Unlike Strickland, Mr. Mourou has his own site on Wikipedia since 2015. Wikipedia's decision stumbles strongly from the scientific community, triggering a debate about the obstacles women face in research area. A few days earlier, veteran physicist, Professor Alessandro Strumia, had an insulting lecture at the CERN particle physics laboratory in Geneva, claiming "the physics created by men".
"It seems that Strickland's contributions to science are not considered interesting because she is a woman and is doing work that many still consider to be men," said Sabine Hossenfelder, theoretical physicist. at the Frankfurt Institute of Advanced Studies, said.
The Nobel Committee increasingly recognizes their poor track record with female scientists. Last year, all winners were men."We are very disappointed to look at the larger scenario that many women have not been awarded. I suspect many women deserve to be considered for more awards," said Göran Hansson, vice president of the board. Nobel fund, share.
