Neil Skjodt, a respiratory expert, and acupuncturist Bill Hodgetts tested MP3-ready MP3 players to determine if they can emit clearer and more recognizable chest sounds than stethoscopes. . Dr. Skjodt asserts that MP3 players help identify lungs and breathe more effectively than stethoscopes.
Researchers intend to create a library of respiratory sounds from MP3 players that distinguish different sounds. They are also investigating the use of this new device to help doctors hear the heart and gut.
According to Dr. Skjodt, MP3 players have many advantages over stethoscopes. The sounds can be saved to the computer and graded for comparison, as well as transmitted over the phone or the Internet, helping the analysts to remotely.
