Pursued, each other sardines jump on the fishermen's boat

Tens of thousands of sardines fluttered out of the water and jumped on a fishing boat at the harbor in Taiwan.

31-year-old fisherman Lu Jingwai recorded a scene of sardines jumping on a boat on July 20, according to Newsweek. The amount of fish out of the water is so great that it makes the sea look like a pot of boiling water. The group of sardines are acting so abnormally because they are chased by larger predatory fish.

In the footage shot by Lu shared on personal Facebook, over 10,000 silver-white small sardines jumped out of the water at the same time at Bisha fishing port in Keelung near Taipei. " It's scary! I'm being attacked by fish!" , Lu shouted in the video.

Lu and his friends picked up the sardines on the boat and dropped them into the water. According to Lu, there is a possibility that the fish will feel dangerous and jump on the sea surface to avoid being eaten. Lu speculated that the fish that were chasing them were barracuda, common in warmer waters."I saw 3 - 5 barracuda longer than a meter swimming in the boat two days ago. I guess these days fall in their hunting season , " Lu said.

Barramundi is a large fish like snake with sharp teeth like fangs. Some may be longer than 1.5 meters, much larger than sardines, which are only 15cm long.

The phenomenon of fish jumping on boats is not uncommon."Although the scene seems unbelievable, this phenomenon is not unprecedented. I suspect the fish are being hunted by barracuda or other carnivorous species and cramped at the port. Their last choice is to dance. leaving the water to avoid losing lives, " said Nicholas Higgs, deputy director of the University of Plymouth Institute of Oceanography.
