2016: More than half of the world's population still has no internet

According to the latest report in 2016 announced by the World Telecommunication Union (ITU), 47.1% of the world's population has access to the internet, up from 43% in 2015. Thus, there is still more than half of the population has not used the internet yet.

The popularity of mobile networks worldwide plays an important role in increasing the number of people connected to the internet . Specifically, mobile broadband networks covered up to 84% of the world's population this year.

"Although the deployment of infrastructure is very important, high prices and other barriers are still big challenges that many people have not accessed the internet," the report said. "This shows that many people still do not enjoy the full benefits of the opportunities that the internet brings."

In 2016, there are still over 50% of the world population who do not have internet access yet.

Zeus Kerravala, an analyst with ZK Research, said the rate of internet users is still too low."The Internet is one of the big elements in life, the world needs to work together so people can access the internet."

While companies like Facebook and Google are studying technologies that provide internet to remote areas around the world, there are still more ideas to accomplish this goal.

Many developing countries still have not covered the internet to the whole country, many people in this area do not use mobile phones. Korea is the country with the highest internet connection rate, but African countries like Niger, Chad, Guinea-Bissau and South Sudan have very low connection rates.

Reasonable cost is still a big barrier that makes people unable to own mobile phones. The cost of buying a phone is a big challenge, even greater than the cost challenge to use the service.

ITU said that people who do not have access to the internet are women, the elderly, those who are less educated, the poor and those living in rural areas.

The potential of the internet has not been fully explored, and the ability to increase connectivity is still huge in the next few years.
