360T glass disk, lasting more than 1 million years
The University of Southampton's Center for Photovoltaic Research (OCR) and Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands) have been involved in the manufacture of glass discs that can store up to 360TB (Terabyte) of data over longevity. 1 million years.
Not only that, the glass disc can also withstand temperatures up to 1,832 degrees Fahrenheit, equivalent to 1,000 degrees Celsius, helping to protect against data loss in the event of a fire. The technology is achieved by using a glass material made of fused nanoparticles and quartz. The data is then recorded through the laser.
Laser beams fire light pulses on the glass disk, so researchers can write data (nanostructures) on all three layers of disk spaced at 5 micrometers apart.
During the initial testing, the researchers succeeded in writing and reading the 300 KB data above. However, researchers say the storage capacity of this technology is much higher, up to 360TB.
In addition, the content stored above can reach a very long life of about 1 million years or more. It is remarkable that data preservation is quite high as they can withstand unusually high temperatures.
"It's one of the breakthrough technologies that allow for archiving of materials that are far out of human lifetimes," said Professor Peter Kazandky of ORC . The key is how to market them commercially. "
