4 asteroids are threatening the Earth

These are four asteroids that can hit Earth in the near future and cause terrible effects.

The United Nations is concerned that the possibility of an asteroid falling into a densely populated area is not taken seriously. Therefore, June 30 is an international asteroid day to raise awareness about possible catastrophic events.

This day was chosen because the impact of the largest asteroid recorded in history took place in Tunguska, Russia on the same day of 1908. A giant asteroid exploded and destroyed hundreds of hectares of forest. .

Here are four asteroids that can hit Earth, synthesized by RT news agency to mark the International Asteroid Day.

1979 XB

With a diameter of 900 meters, if this giant rock collides with our planet, the impact will be huge. It is currently traveling through the solar system at a speed of nearly 70,000km / h and is approaching Earth nearly 30km per second.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has taken it to second place in the 'Dangerous List' for asteroids near Earth. The trajectory of this small planet is uncertain but it is predicted to hit the Earth in the middle of the century.

Experts warn that 1979 XB may be much closer to Earth. This warning is given because there is only one small variant in the orbit of 1979 XB. Its next access to Earth is expected to arrive in 2024.

Apophis

The size of four football fields, Apophis is very close to Earth's orbit. It is currently more than 200 million kilometers from Earth but, every second it approaches 500m.

Apophis's orbit often traverses the Earth. The latest radar data and optical data show that we are near Apophis as it passes through our planet at a distance of only 30,000km in 2029.

If Apophis hits Earth, the impact of the explosion is calculated similarly to about 15,000 nuclear weapons exploded at the same time.

2010 RF12

This asteroid tops the Sentry List (Earth Impact Monitoring System) and the ESA's dangerous list. It is currently about 215 million kilometers from Earth and is moving at a speed of 117,935 km / h.

Fortunately, it is heavy, relatively small, 500 tons and has a diameter of about seven meters. The forecast effect will be a little less than the meteorite that fell on Russia's Chelyabinsk city in 2013, damaging thousands of buildings and injuring hundreds.

2010 RF12 will cross Earth on August 13, 2022.

2000 SG344

2000 SG344 is part of a group called the Aten asteroid, whose orbit is very close to Earth. It is expected to hit the Earth in the next three or four decades.

With a diameter of only 50 meters, it is relatively small in size but still twice as large as the Chelyabinsk meteorite which caused a lot of damage six years ago.

2000 SG344 is currently traveling through space at a rate of over 112,000 km / h and is approaching Earth 1.3km per second.

The asteroids are not detected

Of course, a big part of the danger from space objects is that we don't detect them. Chelyabinsk meteorite has fallen into the Earth's atmosphere without being detected. Its blast released 30 times more energy than the atomic bombs that the US dropped into Japan in 1945.

Most recently, in December last year, another asteroid exploded in the Bering Sea. The explosion was 10 times stronger than the bombs that fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It is hoped that International Asteroid Day will push authorities around the world to improve the way they detect cosmic objects capable of causing catastrophic consequences.
