Scientists have observed four giant galaxies colliding at the same time, in the event considered one of the largest cosmic explosions ever seen.

A group of American astronomers have witnessed this four-way destruction by NASA's Spitzer and Chandra telescopes, combined with ground observatories. Expected colliding galaxies will eventually re-merge into a single behemoth galaxy, with a mass 10 times the size of our Milky Way.

This rare observation provided a whole new perspective on the formation of the largest galaxies in the universe - the group that the giant galaxy would join when the merger phase ended.

According to Kenneth Rines, from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, intergalactic collisions, or mergers, are common in the universe. They usually occur between a large galaxy and a few smaller galaxies, also known as " small mergers ". People have also observed large "mergers" between pairs of similarly sized galaxies. But so far, no merger between many large galaxies has been seen.

"This is the first time I know. Until now, there has been no record of the merger of four galaxies," said Kenneth Rines, co-author of the study.
