4 new cancer genes discovered

Scientists have discovered four new genes that have a significant effect on the development of breast cancer in women. This finding allows doctors to predict the risk of cancer more accurately, helping to prevent and treat the disease more effectively.

In addition, according to Douglas Easton, a Cambridge scientist, the findings also help researchers better understand the progression of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is thought to be highly genetic. But so far, only about 25% of genes suspected to cause genetic breast cancer are identified. New 'criminals' have been identified as genes called GFR2, TNRC9, MAP3K1 and LSP1, which are thought to account for about 4% of the genes that cause hereditary breast cancer.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every year breast cancer kills 500,000 people globally, and up to 1.2 million men and women are diagnosed with the disease each year.
