5 Nobel laureates petitioned to legalize homosexuality
A joint petition of five Nobel Prize winners and many famous actors, politicians . called on countries to " legalize homosexuality ."
These include: Archbishop Desmond Tutu (who received the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize for non-violent struggles against apartheid in his South African homeland), Amartya Sen (Indian, received the Prize Economic Nobel in 1998), Dario Fo (Italian, received the 1997 Nobel Prize for Literature), Elfriede Jelinek (Austrian, won the 2004 Nobel Prize for Literature), Jose Saramago (Portuguese, received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998) ).
According to the petition, 70 countries around the world still view homosexuality as a crime and in 12 countries, homosexuals can be sentenced to death.
Also signed in support of the campaign are political figures like former European Commission President Jacques Delors , American intellectual Noam Chomsky , Spanish actress Victoria Abril , Oscar-winning actress. Meryl Streep .
This petition will serve as a background document for 'a resolution submitted to the United Nations in the next few months', to call for legalization of homosexuality.
According to the campaign website for this campaign (www.idahomophobia.org), 'in 1994, the UN Human Rights Commission condemned Tasmania for its homosexuality as a crime. As a result, Tasmania must change its laws . ' Those involved in the campaign urged the United Nations to make similar decisions for all countries that prohibit homosexuality to ensure they have the most basic rights.
