Al Fayah - The park is built beneath the desert
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been dubbed the paradise of luxurious and splendid buildings for decades including the Palm Tree archipelago or the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai. And now, this list will be added to Al Fayah: a park in Abu Dhabi with an area of 125,000 square meters in the desert. This is like a giant building built on the special structures of the desert and the sand above will be the roof of the building.
The unique and beautiful park mentioned above was designed by Thomas Heatherwick, an imaginative architect and innovator known for his ingenuity in integrating natural elements into previous buildings. . With the idea of the park in the desert this time, Heatherwick will take advantage of the dry desert's many features with many cracks and turn it into a sunshade dome for the oasis below.
As expected, the Al Fayah Park project will be inaugurated in 2017. It will be a house with hundreds of rooms separated by natural fractures of the desert. At the same time, this is also a well-ventilated place as well as light for green trees below. In addition, this desert underground park also has all the services like other ordinary parks like cafes, gardens, public libraries, entertainment spaces, swimming pools, flow and even sauna
Heatherwick shared about his project: "The sand above will be the natural roof for the buildings below from the heat of the desert. But the fractures will be the place to get the light to live. The plants below can grow green ".
Although it is a wealthy country with the ability to spend money seemingly endless, the problem of water supply for buildings is still a challenge for the UAE. Therefore, building a park on the ground is not feasible due to the need for an extremely large supply of water to survive in the harsh conditions of the desert. This is the biggest challenge for Heatherwick in the design process to create a park that can survive for a long time.
Therefore, he abandoned the design of traditional park types that needed too much water to feed the entire greenery. Instead, Heatherwick chose a natural solution to limit the evaporation of water by reducing the intensity of the sun. And finally, the idea of building an underground park in the desert was born.
The park's design is not only beautiful but also unique in combining the available elements of nature and artificial works to help the building maintain itself without using many artificial resources."Instead of denying the existence of deserts and forced construction. We accept it as part of the building and build a park inside it. This can protect the integrity of Naturally, at the same time, helps the building to maintain and sustain itself more sustainably ".
