Amazon said face recognition can identify fears

Amazon said their facial recognition software could detect a person who is scared.

Rekognition is one of many Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud services for developers. It can be used for face analysis or emotional analysis, which identifies different expressions and emotional predictions from images of human faces. This service uses artificial intelligence to learn from the data stream it handles.

According to CNBC, the tech giant revealed updates to the controversial tool on Monday (August 12, 2019), including improving the accuracy and functionality of face analysis features such as Identify gender, emotions and age.

Amazon said: "With this version, we have further improved the accuracy of sex determination. In addition, we have improved the accuracy of emotional detection (for all 7 emotions: 'Fun', 'Sad', 'Angry', 'Surprised', 'Disgusting', 'Calm' and 'Confused' and add a new emotion: 'fear'.

Artificial intelligence researchers have invested a lot of resources to try and read people's emotions by analyzing facial features, movements, and voices . But some experts have shown that , while there is scientific evidence that there is a correlation between facial expressions and emotions, the way people communicate with different emotions varies between different cultures and situations.

Occasionally, similar facial movements may exhibit more than one type of emotion, and so the researchers have warned that they cannot confidently deduce happiness from a smile, anger from scowl or sadness from frowning, as current technology tries to do.

The availability of facial recognition technology has also raised concerns about its potential use in surveillance and privacy infringement.

For its part, Rekognition has become a controversial topic when used by law enforcement agencies and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency in the United States.
