Antibiotics increase the risk of eczema

A new study in the UK found that children taking antibiotics in their first year of life had a 40% increased risk of eczema, according to the Daily Mail on June 20.

The UK team from King College, Nottingham University and Aberdeen Royal Hospital reviewed 20 studies with about 293,000 infants and young children.

This is the first large-scale and systematic review of the relationship between antibiotic use in the first year of life and the risk of eczema.

They found that children taking antibiotics during the first year of life increased their risk of eczema by 40%, especially the broad-spectrum antibiotic had a marked effect.

Consider antibiotics for children under 1 year of age, especially those whose family history has eczema or allergies, according to Dr. Carsten Flohr, a member of the research team.
