The Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) announced on its website on February 19 that the system is similar to the US Global Positioning System.
AEB and Russian counterpart Roscosmos will jointly operate the first overseas Glonass ground station installed at the University of Brasilia.
Glonass uses 24 satellites to provide navigation services around the world.
AEB's website cited the president of the agency, Jose Raimundo Coelho, affirming: 'The partnership will help train qualified professionals for Brazil as well as give Russians a more effective system'.
He said the Glonass system could be used by the University of Brasilia to conduct biomedical and biomedical studies.
