Central Highlands: successful people like red pine
The Department of Biotechnology at Yersin Private University in Da Lat City (Lam Dong) has just succeeded in breeding more than 2,000 red pine trees (scientific name Taxus wallichiana Zucc .) By cuttings method.
It is expected that the tree will be planted to get leaves for the extraction of taxol for the preparation of cancer drugs. Currently, the department has 200 red pine trees a year old growing in pots, about 60cm tall, well developed and waiting for planting. Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung - deputy head of the Department of Biotechnology - said that despite being at the experimental stage, the school has received an offer to buy large quantities of leaves to extract taxol from a French company.
Thus, the university is the first educational institution to succeed in propagating red pine.
