Scientists found 8 new orchids in the Central Highlands

On December 21, Dr. Nong Van Duy, Tay Nguyen Scientific Research Institute, said he and his colleagues found 8 new orchids in the Central Highlands.

This makes the species of orchids in the Central Highlands and Vietnam more abundant.

Dr. Nong Van Duy said in 8 new species of orchids found, there are 4 species found in Lam Dong including: Schoenorchis hangianae Aver., Taeniophyllum phitamii Aver., Sarcolyphis tverii Aver., Ludisia phongii Aver .

Four other species found in the remaining four provinces of the Central Highlands are: Cymbidium repens Aver. & Thinh, Dendrobium thinhii Aver., Trichoglottis canhii Aver., Octarrhena minucscula Aver.

These new orchid species were found by Dr. Nong Van Duy and his colleagues in the process of implementing the scientific topic. "Investigation of the Lan family in the Central Highlands, studying scientific bases for conservation, development and use. effective and sustainable ".

In the 2 years of implementing the project, the research team conducted field surveys at 100 points of forest in the Central Highlands, collected thousands of sample numbers.

Previously, Dr. Nong Van Duy also collaborated with Russian professor Averyanov, Komarop Botanical Institute and professors Chen Tao and Dianxiang Zhang (China) to identify 4 other new orchid species, scientific name 325 species; discover and describe 3 new species of species (Corybas, Hymenorchis and Octarrhena) of Vietnam.

So far, Vietnam has 1,184 orchids. The Central Highlands region is the region with the largest number of orchid species today with 325 species, 107 genera; including 88 endemic orchid species of economic value. Dendrobium alone has the largest number of species with 49 species.

However, the number of limbs, orchids are increasingly in danger of extinction along with the extent of destruction of the current natural forest.

According to the research group of Dr. Nong Van Duy, the Central Highlands area has 72 orchids without scientific data and not yet named in the Vietnam Red Book.
