The new orchid is named Andinia tingomariana by the American Department of Biology and Ecology, in order to preserve the nature reserve where it was discovered. According to AFP, about 30,000 species of orchids have been discovered worldwide and 10% of them can be found in Peru. Tingo Maria National Park with an area of more than 4,777 hectares is now home to more than 240 orchids.
