Discovering new orchids in Peruvian jungle

Botanists yesterday announced the discovery of a new species of orchid in the Amazon rainforest in the Huanuco region, central Peru. It was found by SERNANP ranger team and volunteers on a discovery tour at the newsletter of Tingo Maria, Peru Maria, Peru Reports.

The new orchid is named Andinia tingomariana by the American Department of Biology and Ecology, in order to preserve the nature reserve where it was discovered. "The new discovery highlights the role of Tingo Maria National Park - the country's natural heritage and proves its good conservation standard , " stressed Lorenzo Flores, Tingo Maria National Park Director.

Andinia tingomariana is a species of orchid with flowers classified under genus Andinia. They live in high mountains in mild weather conditions, with an average annual temperature of 20 ° C.

According to AFP, about 30,000 species of orchids have been discovered worldwide and 10% of them can be found in Peru. Tingo Maria National Park with an area of ​​more than 4,777 hectares is now home to more than 240 orchids.
