The new orchid species is called Miguelia cruenta , derived from the 'cruentum' Latin, meaning blood, because its flower lip is red like blood.

They have creeping stems, growing on rocks or trees. Their leaves have short stalks. Flowers are 6-7cm in diameter, and bloom once in two, the forest organism website says.

Orchid Miguelia cruenta is often found in the primeval green broad-leaved forest, on the mountainside and granite cliffs, 1,500 meters above sea level.

This is the second orchid species discovered in Hon Ba Nature Reserve in the last three years, and according to the scientists' forecast, there are many species here that need to be discovered and published.
