Ceramic tiles have radiation

Recently, a measurement was carried out at Ho Chi Minh City Nuclear Center, confirming that some ceramic tiles have radioactivity levels exceeding the permitted limit.

Dr. Tran Van Luyen and his colleagues from Ho Chi Minh City Nuclear Center have measured the level of radioactivity of 20 types of construction materials such as cement, bricks, tiles . which are sold in HCMC market.

These are floating construction materials, often sold in construction material stores and collected randomly as a sample.

Measurement results showed that construction materials such as Da Nang bricks, white ceramic tiles, brown tiles, brown granite have higher radioactive content than usual.

If calculating the average annual effective dose, some types of construction materials such as brown ceramic tiles, Da Nang stone, white glazed tiles, imitation stone, Ha Long pottery and some other materials cause effective doses. higher than the average of the world. Specifically, Da Nang brick has a radioactive content of 1.16 mSV / year; white glazed tiles: 1.22 mSv / year; brown glazed tiles: 1.66mSv / year; brown granite: 0.61 mSv / year. Meanwhile, the world standard limit dose value is 1mSv / year.

"Effective dose" can be understood as the level of radiation dose to body tissue. For ease of visualization, comparability, a single X-ray usually takes doses from 0.2 to 5 mSv.

According to Dr. Tran Van Luyen, in our country, has not had any specific regulations on the use of materials for construction materials and decoration. It all depends on the financial ability and preferences of the user.

Therefore, some materials with high radioactive content are still commonly used.

The reason for the above-mentioned construction materials is radioactivity due to radioactive materials from nature. This inadvertently has caused very serious harm to human health.

Still according to Dr. Tran Van Luyen, to limit the harmful effects of radiation in construction materials, the ventilation of the house is an important factor.

The rooms should be well ventilated, with windows or ventilation systems to ensure gas exchange with the external environment. In rooms with air-conditioners, more ventilation fans are needed to avoid the 'airy' air leading to concentration of radiation in a certain location in the room.
