Chair hug brings joy to the elderly

A special chair can bring joy or safety to older people introduced at the show in Tokyo, Japan.

The chair was designed in the shape of a large cloth doll with a friendly face and a funny hat. Its special feature is that the arms are smooth and long enough to hold a person.

"It gives you a sense of security." Anyone can use this chair, but it's designed primarily for older people, "said AFP quoted a spokesman for UniCare.

Special versions are adapted in case the user has to use a wheelchair. According to UniCare, the product is produced with the desire to bring joy and comfort to the elderly or those who live alone.

According to statistics, the aging rate in Japan is increasing rapidly. One quarter of Japan's population now over 65, and that number is expected to increase by about 40 percent in the coming decades.

At the show, researchers also introduced a robot that could remind elderly people to take medicine, talk or even play music. These inventions are expected to be available worldwide.
