Indian scientists have developed a cancer medicine that can reduce side effects such as hair loss, poor appetite . and make treatment more effective by helping Selectively destroying cancer cells becomes easier.

(Artwork) This drug is named 2DG (2-deoxy D-Glucose) developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), a molecule of glucose-like form (sugar) . All cells need glucose and convert it after absorption to produce energy.

When patients use 2DG, the ingredients in this drug are absorbed directly into the cells (because its molecular structure is similar to glucose). However, 2DG does not work to create energy.

Cancer cells grow very strong and need more energy during cell division, so they absorb more 2DG. Therefore, cancer cells do not have enough energy and will weaken during development. To destroy these weakened cells, only a lower level of radiation is needed and so the side effects will be reduced. This is a treatment that destroys selective cancer cells and makes it more effective.

This drug is in phase III of clinical trials in 500 brain tumor patients to assess its safety and effectiveness. The results of Phase I and II are very encouraging. Feedback showed that radiation therapy in combination with 2DG reduced the duration of treatment and the patients' lives also became better.
