Scientists at the Pasteur Institute in Paris (France) have identified genetic changes that cause autism in children. The findings may provide a more insightful view of the disease on a biological basis and pave the way for effective treatment of the disease.
They have mapped a gene called SHANK3 in more than 200 people with autism disorder (ASD).
ASD affects communication, social interaction, speaking skills and behavioral attitudes. 3-6% of cases are caused by chromosome arrangement. The disease usually does not occur in children under 3 years of age, although it is also found at 18 months of age.
