The International Nature Conservation Fund (WWF) has just published a report on the species of the Amazon forest on the side of a UN summit in Japan.

The report - entitled ' Amazon Alive !: A Decade of Discoveries 1999-2009 ' - said that between 1999 and 2009, scientists found 1,220 new species, including 637 plant species, 257 species. fish, 216 species of amphibians, 55 species of reptiles, 16 species of birds and 39 species of mammals. Thus, an average species is discovered every three days.

The python, up to 4 meters in length, was found in the plains that regularly suffered flooding in the province of Pando, Bolivia in 2002. This is the first giant python species found since 1936 and also a python. the fourth that people know.

Giant catfish is one of 257 species of fish that humans have never known in the Amazon rivers and lakes. One in Venezuela has a body length of nearly 1.5 m and a weight of 32 kg. They often catch other fish to eat, but scientists see many monkey body parts in their stomachs.

Another species of catfish, distributed in the state of Rodonia in Brazil, has an extremely small body, red skin and degenerated eyes, thus losing sight.

At least 500 species of spiders were recorded between 1999 and 2009, in which a species is brown but possesses a pair of blue mounts.

Pink river dolphins, 7 species of monkeys and two species of porcupines are among 39 new mammal species.

Of the 637 new plant species, there are trees of sunflower, ivy, water lily, pineapple and apple.

The Amazon forest is home to at least 40,000 plant species. WWF believes that the level of biodiversity in the ' green lung of the earth ' is amazingly high. However, felling of trees for timber and deforestation for cultivation makes 17% of the Amazon forest area - twice the area of Spain - destroyed in more than 50 years.
