Discover a new planet in the orbit of young Beta Pictoiris star

According to a study published Aug. 19, the second planet was discovered spinning around Beta Pictoiris, a young star in our Milky Way galaxy, helping astronomers visualize a planetary system. in the process of formation.

Anne-Marie Lagrange, an astronomer at the French National Center for Scientific Research, said: "We are talking about a giant planet, 3,000 times the size of the Earth, located far from its star. 2.7 times the distance from the Earth to the Sun ".

The new planet is called "b Pictoris c" , with its orbit around its star 1,200 days long. Like the "sister" - named "b Pictoris b" that Lagrange and her team discovered in 2009, "b Pictoris c" is also a giant gas planet.

Visible to the naked eye, the Beta Pictoris star - nearly twice the mass of the Sun - is a young star of 23 million years old. Our Sun has existed for more than 4.5 million years. Beta Pictoris is also relatively close, just over 63 light years away and surrounded by a star dust disc. This dust and gas spiral is the first to capture, making the Beta Pictoris star famous in the 1980s. Located in the south of the Pictor constellation, Beta Pictoris is the second brightest star in this constellation.

According to Ms. Lagrange, to better understand the early stage of formation and development, this could be "the best planetary system we know". Observations show that the two planets are still in the process of formation.

"B Pictoris b" was discovered after analyzing high-resolution data for nearly 10 years with devices at La Silla Observatory in Northern Chile.

In 2014, scientists said the planet "b Pictoris b" circled at a dangerous speed of about 25km / sec (ie 90,000km / h).
