Discover mysterious radio waves 3 billion light years from Earth

Astronomers have discovered 15 repetitive, powerful radio pulses from a dwarf galaxy 3 billion light years from Earth and may belong to alien civilization.

The origin of the mysterious signals, known as radio waves (FRB) , is still unclear. Some argue that they can be emitted from black holes or neutron stars with extremely strong magnetic fields. Another theory is signals from spacecraft outside of Earth.

Signals detected by the Breakthrough Listen project . The $ 100 million project aims to find signs of civilization in the universe founded by Professor Stephen Hawking and Russian Internet billionaire Yuri Milner.

About two dozen radio waves were discovered earlier. Because they only last a few milliseconds and the radio telescope can only monitor a small area of the sky at any given time, only one of the sources of the wave is detected repeatedly.

The signal source FRB 121102 was discovered in 2012 from a dwarf galaxy about 3 billion light-years from Earth. Another 15 signals are emitted from the same source and at higher frequencies than the previous signals.

"Whether or not the radio waves are off-Earth technology, Breakthrough Listen has also contributed to expanding the border to a new area of rapid development in our understanding of the universe , " Andrew Siemion, The Director of the Berkeley SETI Research Center and the Breakthrough Listen program, told the Guardian.
