Discover new parrot species in Mexico, green head 'crown'
Scientists have discovered a new species of parrot at Mexico's Yucantan Peninsula. This is a blue winged Amazon parrot (scientific name: Amazona gomezgarzai), loud, short, monotonous and repetitive.
Dressed in blue fur and on top of a green "crown" , Amazona gomezgarzai is completely different from the previously found Amazon parrots.

Amazona gomezgarzai live in small populations of less than 12 members in the same habitat of two other species, Amazona xantholora and Amazona albifrons nana. Their main food is nuts, flowers, fruits and leaves. Because of the very small number of Amazona gomezgarzai individuals, scientists have proposed establishing a conservation program for this parrot.
According to research results, Amazona gomezgarzai evolved from a parrot species about 120,000 years ago and is distinguished from other Amazon parrots by color patterns of fur, sound and behavior.
The species of Amazon parrots are present in southern Mexico, the Caribbean and South America. In Mexico alone, there are 22 different species.
According to research by the World Parrot Trust, a third of parrots in the world are at risk of extinction and one of the main reasons is the narrowing or disappearance of habitat and habitat. hunting.
