Discover new species of toad in Nghe An

The new wide-toed toes have been found in the biosphere reserve of Nghe An province.

Dr. Nguyen Thien Tao, a member of the research team, said that the new species has a scientific name is Megophrys latidactyla . Specimens were collected at Pu Mat National Park, Nghe An.

The new toad species is characterized by a flat head, wider than its length, large, protruding eyes, with horns on the upper eyelid, the edges on the fingers and legs of the species have a distinct skin edge.

This is the second species of eye toad recorded in Central Vietnam.

The new species is the result of cooperative research between Vietnam Nature Museum and Saint Petersburg Animal Institute (Russia).
