Discover new species of toad

The new species of toad has a scientific name Leptolalax firthi sp. nov has just been discovered by Vietnamese and Australian scientists in forests with elevations from 860-1720 meters in Kon Tum and Quang Nam provinces.

>>>The extinct toads still live in the laboratory

Dr. Hoang Duc Huy, Department of Biology, University of Natural Sciences (VNU-HCM) said on June 8.

According to Dr. Huy, to distinguish the new eyebrow toad with other species of the same species Leptolalax must have meticulous observations of the pupils' eyes, eyelid colors, skin folds developed in the forefoot, . Quickly, it can be seen that the brown color of Leptolalax firthi is brown and the nodules are sandy. However, in order to distinguish each species in this eyebrow, it requires the observer to have deep and experienced expertise.

'With today's molecular biology techniques, these species are clearly identified based on differences in sequences in mitochondrial DNA between different species. Leptolalax firthi has a genetic difference of more than 10% compared to other species of the same species , 'Dr. Huy said.

Leptolalax firthi species often appear and live in clear and clear streams of water in evergreen forest at an altitude of 860-1720 meters in Kon Tum and Quang Nam provinces. In natural ecosystems, eyebrows only appear in large numbers when it comes to breeding season and gather along the stream banks, they cry loudly to call their partners. In addition to the breeding season, they "disappear" but the reality is that they retreat into the forest vegetation and live there so we do not see.

The new species of toad has also been published in the journal Zootaxa 3321: 56-68 (2012).
