The ancient demon tossed away the dinosaur with a bite

A huge ancient toad species that lives on Earth 68 million years ago has a bite that is so strong that it can eat even small dinosaurs.

Researchers at the University of Adelaide, Australia, looked at the 68 million-year-old fossil of the species named Beelzebufo , also known as demon toad, according to News.com.au. In the study published in Nature yesterday, toads are up to half a meter long and heavier than 4.5kg with super strong bite forces.

The reconstruction of the anatomical features of demonic toads based on fossils found in 1998 allowed the team to calculate its biting force. The frog species Ceratophrys , their descendants today, possesses a 4.5cm wide head. Ceratophrys frogs with horns can produce bite force up to 30 newtons.

"This is the first time we measured biting force in a frog. From our experience, we found horn frogs have quite impressive bite forces and they are not easily released. Biting force of a large demon toad It will be very big and that's certainly not what I want to try , " said Professor Kristopher Lappin of California Polytechnic University, USA.

"Unlike most frogs that have weak jaws and often eat small prey, frogs are caught capturing large animals across their bodies, including other frogs, snakes and mice," said Dr. Marc Jones, researcher. at the University of Adelaide's School of Biology, said.

The study results show that demons have anatomical characteristics that are very similar to modern horn frogs, with a bite force of 2,200 newtons, comparable to today's wolves and tigers."With this bite force, demon toads can subdue small immature dinosaurs in their habitat , " concluded Dr. Jones.
