Two species of fried fish, like Glyptothorax, belonging to the fried fish family - Sisoridae, have been discovered in central Vietnam by Heok Hee Ng, National University of Singapore and Joerg Freyhof, Leibniz Research Institute, Germany. This discovery was also published in the International Journal of Zootaxa 1873.

Deep fried fish (Glyptothorax filicatus n.sp. Ng & Freyhof, 2008) were examined in the tributaries of the Mekong River in the Central Highlands. This species is distinguished from previously published species because of the characteristic of the breast-like form that looks like fern leaves (combs) and the proportions of head and body parts.

Smalleye eel (Glyptothorax strabonis n. Sp. Ng & Freyhof, 2008) was discovered in Giang River, Dong Giang district, Quang Nam province. This new species is named after its small eye characteristics that are distinguished from other species by small eyes shaped by the chest adhesion organ and the ratio of head to body.

Both species of fried fish have been found to be smaller than 10cm, living in streams with strong running water and adapting to the bottom life, so there is a mouth under the head and an attachment under the chest.

This discovery has increased the number of species of fried fish - Glyptothorax in Vietnam to 12 species and the total number of species in the world is 73 species.
