Discovered new birds in Brazil
A group of ornithologists led by Dr. Marcos Bornschein discovered a new bird species in southern Bahia, Brazil. This bird is in danger of extinction.
The new bird belongs to Scytalopus, a small sparrow in the Rhinocryptidae family.
These birds, isolated in the mountains of Bahia state, have been seen since the 1990s but are confused with the previously known Scytalopus.

Based on morphological and biological sound analysis through 11 specimens and several audio tapes, Dr. Bornschein and colleagues concluded that these populations truly represent a new species.
The team chose the scientific name Scytalopus gonzagai for the new bird.
The new bird is about 12cm long in average, weighs 15grams with gray fur and light yellow or brown claws.
Scientists say the new bird is found in Boa Nova, Iguai and some other areas southeast of Bahia state, according to Sci-News.
Ornithologists estimate that these birds only have about 2,883 individuals, so they are highly endangered.
