Archaeologists in southern India have unearthed two 10th-century Buddha statues with inscriptions of a Buddhist king's visit from Southeast Asia.

Rare works found last weekend under the rubble of a government office in Kolappakkam village.

" The discovery is an important proof of the strong religious, diplomatic and commercial relations between India and Southeast Asia over 1,000 years ago, " said archaeologist Satyamurthy.

The area is close to the temple of Shiva and may be part of the temple complex in ancient times.

The granite inscription, written in Tamil, says that a Srivijaya king from Sumatra island in Indonesia today - pilgrimage to the temple, where Shiva is worshiped as the embodiment of god Agastheeshwara.

Buddhist kings also worshiped Agastheeshwara. The inscription indicates that the king bought a local land and gave it to the temple.

Stone statues nearly 1 meter tall show that the Buddha carried East Asian facial features with a meditative posture, proving they were brought by Srivijaya king.
