Discovering the great treasure of ancient Egypt
Marine archaeologists from Oxford University, who excavated the coastal city of Thonis-Heracleion, were drowned in water thousands of years ago.
The port was previously a place for ships to move and unload cargo, to the monks for pricing and taxation, before they were transferred to Egyptian ships on the opposite side.
An archaeologist is measuring red granite statues.
Here, they discovered about 64 Egyptian ships, around the 8th to 2nd century BC, in which many boats were intentionally sunk. These boats are well preserved under the mud. With over 700 ancient anchor artifacts, scientists believe this is the largest marine collection of the ancient world.
'The survey revealed a land with traces of at least two ancient civilizations in the Nile basin, with overlapping natural and artificial waters' - Dr. Damian Robinson, director The archaeological center of Oxford University said.
'The problem is why there are some' ship cemeteries', about 1.6 km from the mouth of the Nile. The 43th boat seemed to be part of a group of 10 boats entering the area. This may be a consequence of competing for entrance to this port city. '
