Display of 6,000-year rose-shaped fossil corals in Ly Son

For the first time, Ly Son island district (Quang Ngai) showed fossil coral reefs of roses to introduce to people and visitors.

From June 21 to 24, the Management Board of Ly Son - Sa Huynh Geopark cooperates with Ly Son island district, Quang Ngai province to display the topic "Ly Son - Essence of festival and geological heritage".

This is the first activity to respond to the Cultural - Tourism Week of Ly Son island district for the second time in 2019; At the same time, it contributes to affirm the island's sovereignty and promote tourism to domestic and international tourists.

On this occasion, the Organizing Committee introduced artifacts and geological specimens and many precious images and materials on the geological heritage of Ly Son - Sa Huynh Geopark, including a cluster of fossilized coral rocks. 6,000 year old date .

Previously, at the end of January 2018, the expert group of the Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) published the results of research on unique paleontological heritage - "Graveyard" of corals jelly near the area of ​​Hang Cau scenic spot, in An Hai commune, Ly Son island district.

Many clusters of coral-fossilized rock fossils of all sizes spread over an area of ​​20,000 square meters on the coast. Experts said that these fossil blocks date from 5,000 to 6,000 years ago.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Nam, Institute of Mineral Geology - Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, said for the first time discovered fossil corals here like a miller of the Northern Delta people used."We have named them millstone corals but a closer look is more like roses," Nam said.

Experts assess the geological heritage in Ly Son island rich, contains many values, now discovered more " fossil coral cemetery" should be eligible to petition UNESCO to recognize the local park global nature.

Quang Ngai determined that the discovery of the "coral cemetery" heritage is of special scientific significance. Therefore, the locality requires authorities to zone and protect and prevent human activities that can be invasive in this geological heritage area.
