Doctor makes friends with black bears

Black bears are considered one of the most dangerous animals for humans, but a scientist has risked his life to prove the opposite.

Lynn Rogers - a British professor and doctor of biology - has been studying bears for 43 years. He recently succeeded in making friends with a black bear family in Northwoods, Minnesota, USA. BBC's Natural World program made a documentary about friendship between Rogers and the black bear. The film is titled "Bearwalker of the Northwoods".

The photos below are taken from the film, posted on the Daily Mail page.

Biologist Lynn Rogers used food to win the trust of a black bear family in Northwood, Minnesota, USA. He followed this family - including a mother bear and three cubs - for over a year and was accepted by them.

The black bear emits a sound like an engine when they suck. It is a sign of their satisfaction.

Dr. Rogers said that black bears are relatively shy, not as aggressive as many people think.

He also confirmed that black bears do not like honey. In the photo on a BBC cameraman filming Dr. Rogers and the mother bear in the Northwoods forest.

Black bears rarely attack people. Rogers said that of the millions of black bears, only one had ever killed. But one out of every 18,000 people killed a bear.

The professor claimed he could not understand everything about black bears without building a close relationship with them. Thanks to the "guarantee" of Rogers, BBC filmmakers filmed the scene of the bear's mating.

Although it seems heavy and slow, the black bear climbs very well. They often climb trees to eat ant larvae - their favorite food.

Many bear experts believe that Rogers' approach to black bear (using food) is very dangerous because bears can become aggressive at any time. But now the doctor has proved that his method is very effective.

Rogers believes that his close friendship with the mother bear (he calls it June) will help him learn everything about this rare animal.
