Dust from Asia stains North America

Tens of millions of tons of dust from Asia fly over the ocean every year and pollute the air in the US and Canada.

A study by the US Aerospace Agency (NASA), published in Science, proves that about half of microscopic dust particles in the North American atmosphere come from outside. Most of that dust comes from nature, not a product of coal burning and other fossil fuels.

Based on data from a CALIPSO-named environmental monitoring satellite, NASA scientists calculated that about 64 million tons of dust from Asia had crossed the ocean and traveled to North America every year. Meanwhile, the total amount of dust generated from factories, vehicles and natural processes is about 69 million tons.

'Assessing the amount of dust in the atmosphere is an important solution for us to better understand how dust travels around the planet and their impact on climate change as well as air quality' , AFP quoted Hongbin Yu, a NASA atmospheric researcher.

The research team confirmed that the US and Canadian efforts to reduce dust in the atmosphere do not achieve the desired results because dust can be generated by dry weather, drought and desertification - the consequences of gas change. post.

'Every country must work together to reduce emissions into the environment. That's the only way to reduce the amount of dust in the air , 'the team confirmed.

Dust can cause negative impacts on the environment because they block sunlight, change the structure of clouds, increase the speed of melting of snow on mountains. Today snow in the western mountains of the United States is melting faster than before. According to calculations by researchers, dust from Asia makes the amount of sunlight in North America reduce by one third per year.
