Escape death by pumping alcohol into the heart
British doctors have saved a man's life, thanks to a non-traditional treatment - shooting pure alcohol into his heart's blood vessels.
The hospital where Mr. Aldom was treated.
Mr. Ronald Aldom, 77, suffered from arrhythmia, could die if not treated promptly. Doctors tried many traditional methods but failed.
Finally, they decided to use pure ethanol to activate the heartbeat in a controlled manner, and inactivate one area of his heart muscle.
Doctors inserted a catheter into the blood vessel in the groin area, and led it to the heart. When the catheter recognizes the area that is generating a dangerous heartbeat, ethanol is pumped out. This alcohol kills the disordered heart muscle area - helps the heart rate to return to normal.
So far, only very few people have been able to take this treatment in the UK.
Dr. Tom Johnson's heart doctor, said Mr. Aldom is now "getting better". "He could not leave the hospital without treatment. At that time there was no other way for him."
