Facial wrinkles - signs of lung disease
Crinkled wrinkles on smokers' faces signal a high risk of lung disease. Smoking is still known to make people old.
Smoking makes people old. Research has found that middle-aged smokers whose faces are wrinkled are five times more likely to develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including emphysema, bronchitis.
The World Health Organization predicts COPD by 2020 will be the third highest cause of death worldwide. However, not all smokers are infected with COPD.
The study examined 149 middle-aged smokers, of whom 68 had COPD. While only 25% of the group has wrinkles, those with COPD are 5 times more likely to be in the wrinkled group.
COPD begins with a severe cough with sputum. It gradually leads to fatigue, the breathing difficulties caused by the lungs are destroyed.
Because the disease develops slowly, scientists believe that facial wrinkles are a sign of the disease before being discovered.
