FAO approved a plan to protect plant genetic resources

On December 1, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) adopted a new global plan to conserve and sustainably use plant genetic resources for agriculture and food production.

With the 'Second Global Action Plan for Food and Agricultural Genetic Resources' , FAO said that a new commitment of the international community to ensure effective management of plant diversity is a city. An important part in the fight against poverty and improving food security in the context of the world is facing the problem of climate change.

The plan also requires all countries to better manage the diversity of crops, develop strategies to protect, collect and conserve endangered and supported plant and wildlife species. the use of plant characteristics to propagate and strengthen seed systems, especially those suitable for local, on a large scale.

According to FAO, the diversity of plants is being threatened by the gradual loss of genetic resources, one of the main reasons being the replacement of local varieties with modern varieties. Other causes are environmental degradation, urbanization and land clearance through deforestation.

FAO Secretary of the Committee for Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture Linda Collette said: through this second action plan, the international community affirmed its commitment to stop the loss of genetic resources and Good conservation of plant genetic resources.

These genetic resources provide valuable properties to address future challenges such as adjusting crops to adapt to changing climate conditions and diseases.
