For the first time, a Vietnamese doctor has repaired the heart and lung transplant

Doctors of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital have successfully performed heart and lung transplant surgery at the same time, helping preserve lives for patients.

Prof. Dr. Tran Binh Giang, Director of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, said that the hospital's doctors have successfully performed a series of multi-organ transplant-transplant surgeries from brain-dead donors, including the heart, two lungs, liver, two kidneys. Including 2 very special transplant cases, the first time performed in Vietnam.

On December 17, from a 19-year-old boy who died of brain injury due to severe multi-organ traumatic brain injury, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital conducted two special transplants.

The first case was a double-lung transplant with open heart surgery to repair congenital heart disease (heart transplant - lung transplant). Female PTH patient, 30 years old, suffered from congenital heart disease with large-scale atrial septal defect. Patients are very likely to die from cardiac - pulmonary dysfunction.

According to GS Giang, this case has two treatment options: Correcting heart defects with open-heart surgery with lung transplant (if the heart function is still good) or multi-organ transplant both heart and lung (if cardiac dysfunction). Because H.'s heart function is quite good, doctors recommend surgery in the first direction.

The second special transplant is for MS patients (59 years old, Lao nationality). Patients with both hepatic and renal impairment, indicated for transplantation of these two organs, can transplant each organ or simultaneously. After the whole hospital consultation, the doctors decided to transplant both liver and kidneys simultaneously for the patient from the brain-dead donor, avoiding the risk of 2 consecutive surgeries.

Currently, patients receiving organ transplants are in stable health and function is gradually recovering. After surgery, patients do not need dialysis, alert, intubated after 3 days.
