For the first time in history, a commercial satellite successfully surveyed the entire sky of the Earth
Origin Space Technology's Yangwang-1 satellite.
On June 11, 2021, China launched a total of four devices from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center located in northern Shaanxi province. Among them is Yangwang-1, an astronomical satellite equipped with an ultraviolet camera and CMOS light sensor, developed by Origin Space Technology.
In addition to the task of detecting meteors flying close to Earth, Yangwang-1 can also observe phenomena appearing in the Earth's atmosphere such as aurora borealis and monitor the night sky. Over the weekend, Origin Space Technology announced another groundbreaking Yangwang-1 achievement.
The Chinese instrument has become the world's first commercial satellite to successfully survey the entire sky of the Earth using optical technology. This achievement at the same time shows how great the potential of private technology companies. Future astronomers will be able to refer to many other data sources, besides major projects of famous aerospace organizations such as NASA (USA) or ESA (Europe).
In the near future, Origin Space will build an array of satellites, including a series of space telescopes with multiple frequency bands, to help diversify the data collected. It is expected that the first 10 satellite system will be completed in 2023.
Not stopping there, Origin Space Technolog also intends to exploit resources on meteorites, using them for experimental purposes. According to the schedule given by the company, it will conduct the NEO-X mission in 2025, which aims to successfully capture a near-Earth celestial body with a high-tech mesh.
