Found an intact brain from medieval times
Scientists have identified intact neurons in a brain of a mummy that has been preserved since the 13th century.
This brain is found in the skull of an 18-month-old baby in the 13th century.Saline and seawater clay in this area has preserved the brain naturally.
This finding shows the viability of human brain tissue over the centuries.
The study, published in Neuroimage, said a team of researchers at the University of Zurich in Switzerland found the brain in a skull from a mummy of an 18-month-old baby from the 13th century.
Although it lost 80% of its initial mass, it retained the structural and structural characteristics of the cells. The brain is the only tissue that is preserved in the mummy found.
"This is the only case of brain tissue that is naturally preserved without the presence of other soft tissue," said anatomist Ruhli .
The brain is found in an almost intact state. The wrinkles on the cortex are still clearly printed.
Even more surprising is that the cell structure is also preserved to a certain extent. In microchips, scientists have discovered large gray and white matter cells, blood vessels and large nerves near the hippocampus area - the area that makes up the brain's memories. The cells retain their original shape and structure.
In fact, it is almost impossible to find brain tissue in mummies due to the breakdown of soft tissue as well as the old people often taking the brain during mummification.
According to scientists, this brain is conserved due to the characteristic environment in this region.
The mummy was unearthed in Quimper-Bretagne, France, in a state of being wrapped in animal skin, placed in a wooden coffin, with a pillow under the head. The salty clay environment and pure salt water here preserve the brain by 'salt pickle' method.
They also said that the baby may die from cerebral bleeding due to skull cracks.
This finding is thought to be important because, according to scientists, it proves that the structure of cells can last for a very long time.
