Scientists named this city Chactun , meaning Red Stone . Chactun has a total area of 22 hectares, is home to about 30,000-40,000 people, half of the population in the largest city of Mayan civilization, Tikal, in Guatemala today.

Chactun is also the largest city found in the central plains of Yucatan. Mr. Sprajc said Chactun flourished in the Classic period of Mayan civilization, around the 7th and 10th centuries.

Mr. Sprajc said the multi-ball complex is a proof that Chactun has a very important position in the Mayan civilization. According to him, the city began to be abandoned in the 10th century, perhaps due to many factors such as climate change, population pressure or war.

Currently Chactun is located in a nature reserve in Mexico. Sprajc's group saw some ruins when viewing photos of the Mexcio National Committee on plant knowledge and diversity in the reserve 15 years ago.

They took 3 weeks to build a 16km long trail through the forest into the relic. After studying, drawing diagrams and taking photos of Cheatun, scientists locked the trail they created to protect the city.

Sprajc hopes the discovery of Chactun will help to better understand the relationship between different regions in the Maya kingdom at their peak.
