After years of delays, Greece is again on track to refurbish an unused airport and turn it into the "largest smart city" in Europe, Interesting Engineering reported on May 6. The city will be built on the old Ellinikon airport located near Athens. This defunct airport is located in the southern coastal region of Greece. Project developers say the smart city will include many apartments, large open green spaces and sustainable energy sources.
According to some reports, development activities at the construction site are currently being increased. Marina Tower, which will become Greece's first skyscraper upon completion, is under construction. Next to that is the frame of the adjacent houses.
Ellinikon is a super-large-scale future city project in Greece , spanning more than 2,500 hectares. In addition, Ellinikon is only a 20-minute drive from Athens, so it is very convenient for people to travel between the two cities. This one-of-a-kind project aims to create the perfect combination of luxury, sustainability and cutting-edge technology, providing a range of experiences for residents and visitors.
Ellinikon will have a luxury Mandarin Oriental hotel and resort. In addition, the city will own Europe's largest coastal park and residential areas with sea views. The city also has two large shopping malls and a sports complex for swimming, soccer and tennis. Ellinikon also integrates modern technology into waste, water and energy management.
Ellinikon will bring important economic benefits. It is expected that the city will help the national GDP increase by 2.5% and can create 80,000 new jobs. The project will also generate about $10.7 billion in tax revenue when completed in 2037 and is expected to attract about one million visitors a year.
