Grenades know 'look' and pursue goals

While fighting with many terrorists in a solid building, the soldiers throw a strange object into the building. After looking around, the strange object quietly moved closer to the terrorists and exploded.

Users can launch or throw smart grenades into places where they can not.

The story does not appear in a science fiction film, but it can happen in reality. Discovery said that the Hanwha company in Korea has successfully built a kind of 'intelligent grenade' . This grenade, in fact, is a small form of robot, capable of moving under human control.

With a volume of only 670-700g, the intelligent grenade has a plastic body connected to two rubber wheels. Its body contains a small camera, radio transmitter, explosive and detonator.

Intelligent grenades come in a protective shell. When released it is still in the shell. Grenades can travel up to 100 meters to the target.

When the grenade hits the ground, the shell ruptures and moves. Its camera allows the operator to bring it to the desired location and detonate.

Min Su Park, chief researcher for Hanwha's grenade launchers, said Korean troops used their products.

The weakness of smart grenades is that they can not carry as many sensors as big robots . Besides, they do not carry large batteries (so the operating time will be short) and the range is quite narrow.

The biggest challenge for Hanwha is to reduce the volume of intelligent grenades, so that soldiers do not feel heavy when carrying them.
