Hollywood birds have to take birth control pills

Hollywood residents believe they have found a very human way to reduce the population of pigeons here as well as the chaos they cause, that is to use birth control pills.

In the next few months, a bird reproduction control product called OvoControl P, which interferes with egg development, will be mixed with pigeon food.

"I think we have a good solution to this bad situation," said Laura Dodson, president of Argyle Civic, the pioneer in the application of the new contraceptive method.

Animal rights organizations have supported this measure among a range of other solutions such as electric shock, roofing, poisoning . About 5,000 pigeons have chosen Hollywood as home. Their population exploded out of control partly due to human feeding.

The pilot program is expected to produce results in 1 year, and the pigeon population in the Hollywood region will fall by at least half by 2012, Dodson said.
