More than 10 types of animal fossils, including fossils of antelopes, pandas . have been unearthed at a 400 square meter cave at 1,200 meters above sea level. The fossils of pandas date to about 80,000 - 100,000 years ago. Previously, in 1984, fossils of the species Ailuropoda micrta, a 'small panda' form were also discovered at Longgupo. Ailuropoda micrta lived about 1.8 to 2.48 million years ago and is believed to be the ancestor of today's pandas.
