In this horror cave there is a creature that stunned scientists
Thinking that there was no life in this toxic and acidic cave, scientists were surprised by the findings.
Deep in the ground of Steamboat Spring city in Colorado state is a deadly cave . The air inside the cave is extremely toxic sulfur gas, dripping acid drops from the ceiling, this acid is so thick that it can puncture your shirt.
The cave floor is covered with mucus, mingled with acid from the ceiling and unknown solutions. Basically, this is hell on earth, and anyone who enters here without enough protection will die after a few seconds.
The cave floor is covered with mucus.
How, how do researchers decide to set foot on this deadly land? They do it for science and, of course, with the help of science.
Using a large ventilation duct, they could pull out the sulfur gas out of the cave, and could infiltrate it in a less dangerous way. Entering the cave, they thought it was horrifying but it was also magnificent: an unprecedented world of people ever arrived.
Stalactite on the ceiling of the cave.
It seems like no creature survives in such a horrifying environment, but in the cave, even a closed ecosystem still exists. These creatures live without the sun, they include a variety of insects, beetles, spiders and, most specifically, a red-colored worm. They gather in clusters of burrows and eat mucus filled with unicellular bacteria that fall from the ceiling, as well as being available on the ground.
These worms can live in extremely harsh conditions, discovered by biologist David Steinmann when he discovered Luu Huynh Cave in 2007, but it took 1,000 hours of laboratory analysis. New scientists have identified this as a new species.
These worms can live in extremely harsh conditions.
This worm is extremely small, only 2.5cm long and as thin as a pencil nib. They cling to each other in clusters and eagerly "roam" on the walls and cave floor. With a transparent body, it is easy to see red blood vessels in their bodies.
Cave biologist Steinmann recounts the somewhat frightening and slimy memory of this cave discovery process. "It's like a bad omen. I have to climb and crawl through a sticky and muddy slope, full of smell of rotten eggs to get to the cave ".
And only to worry about not only the toxic sulfur gas here, the ceiling also drips acid enough to penetrate your shirt .
It feels like entering the Alien's lair in James Cameron's movie. Or there is a sensation that can be seen by the scientists' comments, this is like the stomach of some giant creature: slimy fluid and full of acid, with a characteristic stench.
After struggling to overcome the first stage, from the second time onwards completely covered by darkness. And when the lights turned on, the whole group was amazed at the sight they saw. The plaster blocks glistened with lights, perhaps the first light entering the dead cave. And the biggest surprise scientists found were red bloodworm clusters living in such harsh environments.
Red bloodworm clusters live in harsh environments.
The interesting thing about this discovery is that we can find life in such a toxic environment. A living ecosystem is not based on sunlight, but by toxic gas hydrogen sulphide (hydrogen sulfur).
The hydrogen sulphide level in this cave system is 10 times higher than the volcanoes in the ocean, which also have an ecological system in existence.
David Steinmann also believes that this may have potential for future medicine when studying this worm. In addition to their ability to resist sulfur in the toxins, the red color of the worms shows that their blood is very well interacting with oxygen, which can be useful discoveries for humans to have learn and study oxygen-deficient environments.
