India: Bollywood actors propagate AIDS warning
Bollywood movie star teamed up with BBC news agency to propagate warning of HIV-AIDS threat in India.
Shilpa Shetty and Viveik Oberoi are two of the stars participating in the AIDS epidemic television program produced by BBC World Service Trust. India's national AIDS control organization and TV channel Doordarshan TV acted together with the BBC in this project. The practical program is called 'Haath Se Haath Milaa ' (Please tighten hands) and Anu Malhotra is the creative director of the project.
According to official statistics, in India there are 5 million people infected with HIV. Movie actress Shilpa Shetty said at the introduction of the Delhi program: ' I participated in the project to show my solidarity with people living with HIV-AIDS. I will do anything to help them . '
During each broadcast, a Bollywood star will appear with a young man to warn about the dangers of AIDS. Stars Shilpa Shetty, Viveik Oberoi, Dia Marza and Raveena Tandon were the first to be filmed for the show.
This humane project attracted the participation of many other Indian movie stars. Participants in the program alongside Bollywood stars include an HIV-infected woman and the number of social workers working on the AIDS program.
The ' Haath Se Haath Milaa ' project is funded by the UK Department of International Development (DFID). In addition to this project, BBC World Service Trust also produces many other AIDS programs. According to the agency's assessment, 250 million Indian television viewers have warmly welcomed Trust's television programs since the project started.
