India: 11 million people may die of AIDS in the next 20 years
The HIV / AIDS epidemic could kill 11 million people in India in the next 20 years, the Times of India cited sources from official census figures.
Along with the number of 5 million unborn children due to mothers who die young because of AIDS, India also forecasts that by 2026, the country's population of 1.4 billion will be reduced by 1.2% because of AIDS.
The UN AIDS Agency (UNAIDS) says 5.7 million Indians are currently living with the HIV virus, making it the world's most infected country, surpassing South Africa - the nation. There are 45 million people with more than 1 out of 9 HIV positive people.
Indian officials do not accept UNAIDS statistics and continue to source from the Ministry of Health that only 5.2 million people in this country are living with HIV / AIDS. However, AIDS groups say the numbers are much higher.
'If we don't stop the AIDS epidemic now, we will replace South Africa in terms of AIDS deaths,' an Indian MP said at a meeting with rural politicians today (9). -8).
Also today, government officials announced plans to bring together thousands of rural politicians to spread anti-AIDS messages in the countryside, where more than 60% of Indians live.
