Indoor farm for over 80 tons of clean vegetables every year
A Japanese company uses indoor vegetable cultivation technology, producing more than 80 tons of fresh vegetables every year.
Japanese company Panasonic started growing green vegetables in a warehouse in Singapore since 2014 to sell to local food stores and restaurants, according to Business Insider.
At that time, the 248m 2 farm only produced 3.6 tons of vegetables per year.To date, the farm's area and output have quadrupled, said Alfred Tham, assistant director of Panasonic's Agricultural Sales Department.
All of Panasonic's green vegetables are grown year-round in the house, using LED light instead of sunlight .Vegetable prices are stacked up to the ceiling to produce higher yields in confined spaces.
20 farm workers wear hoods, masks, gloves and protective clothing before work to avoid the risk of contaminating the vegetable growing area.
The farm produces 81 tons of green vegetables each year, accounting for 0.015% of the total vegetables grown in Singapore.Panasonic plans to raise this number to 5%.
Currently, the warehouse is planting 40 kinds of vegetables, including red radish sprouts, white radish, rocket salad, Japanese cabbage, rainbow mustard, romaine lettuce. In March 2017, the farm will start planting 30 more vegetables.
To grow vegetables, Panasonic workers planted seeds on vegetable growing prices.Unlike many other vertical farms, Panasonic's farm grows green vegetables on the land.
Every vegetable grows under the LED instead of the sun.Light bulbs are supplied by a local company and consume less energy than regular light bulbs.
LED lighting bulbs regularly promote fast growing plants.Farmers also control the weather inside the warehouse, including oxygen, pH and temperature.
When seeds start sprouting, farmers move plants into small pots.Small nozzles provide nutrient-rich water for plants.
The goal of the farm is to increase vegetable production in Singapore, where more than 90% of food is imported. The island is very scarce, so growing vegetables in the home can become a viable solution to produce more green vegetables, according to Tham.
Panasonic's in-house agricultural project is part of the Plant Solutions division, which creates industrial machines and systems.
"We anticipate this industry to be very potential in terms of global agricultural land shortages, growing population, climate change, and demand for stable and high quality food supplies." , Tham said.
